Chronology of cameras Van Neck
After WWII the European market was invaded with American press cameras such as the Graflex and others. Peeling & Van Neck attempted to compete with those and developed a similar type of camera, partially based on their successful strut folding press camera. The Van Neck drop bed press camera was not sold however in great numbers, being today a rare find.
The camera body is wooden with a steel drop bed, and has both a focal plane shutter, similar to the earlier Van Neck press cameras, and a central shutter. Focusing is made with a radial level coupled to the rangefinder and showing the distances in a rotating triangular scale for different lens combinations. The range finder is calibrated for the different lenses with a top selector knob. This particular specimen Is for quarter-plate format (3 ¼ x 4 ¼ inches) and is retrofitted with a Compur (Zeiss Ikon branded) front shutter and a Carl Zeiss Jena Tessar with 15cm of focal length and maximum aperture of 4.5. The focal plane shutter delivers speeds in the range 1/10 to 1/1000 plus B, and the central shutter 1 to 1/200. The most common combination is however Synchro-Compur/Ross Xpres.
There is some debate regarding the production of this camera, or even if it went into real full production, being the sold cameras a series of prototypes. The fact is that it was certainly produced in very small numbers.
